Hakone is not one place at one altitude. It runs from the town at Hakone-Yumoto, low and warm, up through Gora to the ridge above Owakudani and across to Lake Ashi. That spread of height is the whole story of the leaf season: the top turns first and the bottom turns last, and the gap between them is around a month.

In practice that means late October on the high ground, the first half of November around the lake, and the second half of November down in the town.
